Placing a visually impaired student in a mainstream classroom is not, by itself, inclusion. True inclusion — the kind that shapes emotional well-being and academic outcomes — requires something more fundamental: a genuine sense of belonging.
This study, published in the *Advance Social Science Archive Journal*, investigated the factors that shape social belongingness among visually impaired students in inclusive schools in Lahore, Pakistan. Using purposive sampling, researchers surveyed 114 participants — special education teachers and pre-service teachers — and analyzed the data through descriptive and inferential statistics to identify individual, interpersonal, and environmental contributors to belonging.
Supportive teacher-student interaction was the strongest driver of belonging. When teachers actively recognized the needs of visually impaired students and responded with targeted support, students were reported to feel like valued members of the school community. The study makes clear that it is relational care — not merely physical proximity — that creates genuine inclusion. Seating a student in the classroom is the starting point, not the finish line.
Peer relationships were equally decisive in shaping belonging. When visually impaired students had genuine opportunities for interaction with sighted classmates, their sense of belonging strengthened measurably. Conversely, peer exclusion and low disability awareness among non-disabled students were among the most significant barriers identified. Social exclusion, the study suggests, often begins not with formal policies but with informal peer dynamics that go unaddressed.
Environmental factors also played a meaningful role. Access to assistive technology and accessible physical spaces — including braille materials, screen readers, and mobility infrastructure — correlated positively with social integration. Schools that lacked these resources inadvertently reinforced exclusion through structural barriers that prevented full participation in everyday school life.
The research contributes important evidence to the inclusive education debate, demonstrating that investment in teacher-student relationships and peer awareness programs yields tangible social outcomes. A key limitation is that the sample consisted entirely of teachers and pre-service teachers; the direct voices of students with visual impairments were not captured, which future research should address by centering student-reported experiences.
For teachers, the practical takeaway is actionable: disability awareness sessions for all students should be a regular feature of the school calendar, and structured small-group activities that naturally involve visually impaired peers help normalize interaction from the ground up. At the institutional level, launching peer mentorship programs and expanding assistive technology support can meaningfully accelerate the path from physical placement to genuine social inclusion.
