Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) is becoming increasingly widespread in Korean schools. However, claims of its effectiveness coexist with criticisms that there is insufficient evidence. Consequently, there is a pressing need to objectively evaluate the quality and effectiveness of SEL intervention studies conducted within the Korean context.
A meta-analysis published in PLoS ONE systematically evaluated the qualitative level and effect sizes of SEL intervention studies carried out in Korea. The researchers conducted an extensive search of domestic databases for SEL-related intervention studies and analyzed the quality of research designs, effect sizes, and moderating variables.
The results indicated that the overall effect size of SEL interventions in Korea was at a medium level. Significant effects were confirmed across various outcome variables, including social-emotional competence, academic achievement, and the reduction of behavioral problems. However, there was substantial heterogeneity in the effect sizes, meaning some programs were highly effective while others were not.
What accounted for these differences? The analysis of moderating variables revealed three significant factors. First, program duration—programs lasting eight weeks or longer were more effective than short-term programs. Second, session frequency—interventions held twice a week or more were more effective than those held once a week. Third, the expertise of the facilitator—effectiveness was higher when programs were led by professional counselors or trained teachers.
The most concerning finding, however, was that the overall qualitative level of the research was low. A significant number of studies lacked proper random assignment, utilized inappropriate control groups, or lacked sufficient validity in their measurement tools. These flaws undermine the reliability of the reported effect sizes.
The implications of this meta-analysis are twofold: it provides objective evidence that SEL is effective in Korea, but it also highlights the urgent need to improve research quality. In this sense, the statements "it is effective" and "the evidence is weak" can both be true simultaneously.
What can Korean educational policymakers and research institutions do? First, they must mandate rigorous research designs—including random assignment, active control groups, and long-term follow-ups—in SEL research. Second, government-funded projects should be designed based on the characteristics of effective programs: a duration of at least eight weeks, a frequency of at least twice per week, and the use of professional facilitators.
