Journal of Further and Higher Education

A significant number of incoming freshmen experience anxiety and depression during their first semester. Students approaching graduation suffer from employment anxiety, while those in the middle of their studies often collapse under burnout and feelings of isolation. Mental health crises tend to emerge at every major transition point of university life.
Published in the Journal of Further and Higher Education, this study comprehensively examines the mental health experiences of students and staff across three key transitions: entering, progressing through, and leaving university. A distinguishing feature of this research is that it gathers perspectives from both students and staff.
The results indicate that deteriorations in mental health were prominent across all three transition periods. During the transition into university, the primary issues were isolation, homesickness, and identity confusion. During the transition through university, academic burdens, financial pressures, and conflicts in social relationships acted as complex stressors. Finally, the transition out of university triggered psychological distress due to future uncertainty, pressure to find employment, and the loss of the student identity.
The perspectives of staff members were equally critical. Professors and teaching assistants reported that while they recognize students' mental health issues, they lack the capacity and systemic support to respond effectively. Many felt their options were limited to referring students to counseling centers, and some staff members experienced their own burnout due to heavy workloads.
Why are university transitions particularly risky? Transitions fundamentally require the reconfiguration of social networks. Students become most psychologically vulnerable during the gap when existing support systems loosen and new ones have not yet formed. Without appropriate intervention during these periods, problems can accumulate, potentially leading to academic dropout or self-harm.
The implication of this study is that university mental health support must be a continuous system that encompasses all transitions, rather than a one-time event. Support should not end with a single orientation session; instead, tailored interventions must be designed for every transition phase.
What can universities and educational institutions implement? First, operate customized support programs for each transition: peer mentoring upon entry, stress management workshops during enrollment, and a combination of career coaching and psychological support upon graduation. Second, mandate Mental Health First Aid training for staff. It is essential for staff to possess the minimum competency required to detect early warning signs in students and connect them with appropriate resources.
