"Why do we need to learn this?" That familiar student question captures the core problem that inquiry-based teaching sets out to solve. Rather than passively absorbing information, inquiry approaches invite students to ask questions, design investigations, and construct their own scientific understanding.
This systematic review synthesized empirical literature on inquiry-based teaching and learning (IBTL) in science education, identifying the conditions under which IBTL produces meaningful outcomes and the instructional strategies that best support it.
Several consistent findings emerged across the reviewed studies. First, inquiry-based teaching reliably improved scientific inquiry skills and knowledge construction. When students led their own investigations, their depth of understanding and knowledge retention increased significantly. Second, effectiveness depended on systematic instructional scaffolding. Unstructured open inquiry without adequate teacher guidance was repeatedly associated with weaker learning gains—effective inquiry is guided, not ungoverned. Third, student engagement and attitudes toward science improved substantially with inquiry instruction. Success experiences in inquiry created a positive cycle, boosting both interest in science and self-efficacy.
The review confirms that inquiry-based science teaching is evidence-backed, not merely fashionable. A limitation is that aggregate findings may not fully capture contextual differences across individual studies—school level, subject characteristics, and teacher expertise all matter.
Practical recommendations: (1) Scaffold inquiry tasks in stages so students experience both autonomy and structured support; (2) Activate prior knowledge before inquiry to ensure cognitive readiness; (3) Build in peer sharing and feedback sessions to deepen knowledge construction socially. When inquiry becomes the classroom standard, student questions become the starting point of learning.
