One of the most prominent topics in recent education is "inclusion." While the focus was previously on special education or individualized learning, today's schools are evolving into multicultural spaces where students with diverse characteristics—including disability status, cultural backgrounds, and learning paces—learn together. In response to this shift, educational settings are focusing on establishing "inclusive educational environments" to ensure that no student is marginalized and that everyone can reach their full potential.
A key methodology for realizing this inclusive education is the "co-teaching" model. Co-teaching is a collaborative instructional approach where two or more teachers teach together in a single classroom. Moving beyond a simple division of labor, it is an integrated approach in which teachers share knowledge and skills to simultaneously meet the diverse needs of individual students. Co-teaching has been recognized as particularly effective in subjects like mathematics and science, where conceptual understanding and problem-solving skills are critical, by increasing student engagement and narrowing learning gaps.
The present study focuses on the actual process of implementing this co-teaching model in the field. Specifically, it provides an in-depth analysis of how preservice teachers participating in an urban teacher residency program learn inclusive practices through the experience of co-teaching within the specific academic domains of mathematics and science classrooms.
Moving beyond the acquisition of theoretical knowledge, the preservice teachers in this study were immersed in the complex and dynamic environment of the actual classroom. They did not simply learn "how to teach together"; rather, they underwent a process of observing diverse learner groups, diagnosing their difficulties, and constantly interacting with fellow teachers to resolve these issues. For example, when a student struggled to understand a mathematical concept, one teacher might provide supplementary explanations using visual aids, while the other engaged the student in an individual conversation to provide psychological motivation.
These field experiences provided critical learning opportunities for the preservice teachers. Co-teaching allows educators to view complex educational problems—which are often difficult to solve through individual capacity alone—from multiple perspectives. As one teacher captures a subtle change in a student's behavior or a cause of learning deficiency that another might miss, the teachers experience an "expansion of perspective."
The research results demonstrate not only the positive impact of co-teaching on students but also its effect on the professional development of teachers. Through co-teaching, preservice teachers were able to simultaneously develop "collaborative problem-solving skills" and an "attitude of acceptance toward diversity." This suggests that inclusive education is not merely a matter of curriculum, but a systemic issue that requires changes in teachers' professional competencies and attitudes.
Consequently, the findings of this study offer important implications for future teacher training systems. Teacher education programs in universities and educational institutions must move beyond simple theoretical lectures and essentially include "long-term, structured co-teaching practicums" linked to actual urban school settings.
Only when teachers repeatedly experience collaborating toward common goals in the field does the philosophy of inclusive education become embodied in actual instructional methods. In subjects such as mathematics and science, where logical thinking and inquiry skills are essential, co-teaching serves as a powerful tool to increase academic achievement while providing equal "opportunities to learn" for all students.
In conclusion, amidst the increasing diversity of educational settings, co-teaching is evolving beyond a simple instructional technique to become a core methodology for realizing an educational philosophy that respects and includes all students. It is expected that preservice teachers acquiring professionalism through such field-based collaborative learning will provide the successful foundation for the true inclusive education that our society aspires to achieve.
