First-year nursing students often buckle under the immense pressure of anatomy and pharmacology. In a field of nursing education characterized by high dropout rates, which students survive? Is it intelligence, or is it something else?
A study published in *Nurse Education Today* examined whether "grit"—defined as passion and perseverance for long-term goals—predicts academic achievement among nursing students. What sets this research apart is its focus on whether cultural context moderates the effects of grit.
The results revealed that grit significantly predicts academic achievement in nursing students. Students with higher levels of grit achieved higher grades and performed better in clinical practice evaluations. However, a more critical finding was that the two sub-factors of grit—passion and perseverance—operate differently. Specifically, perseverance was a stronger predictor of achievement.
Cultural context proved to be a vital factor. While research in Western contexts showed that passion and perseverance contribute more equally, the non-Western context examined in this study found that perseverance was overwhelmingly more important. The weight assigned to "not giving up" versus "loving the same thing" varies by culture. In collectivist cultures, perseverance toward a goal is more highly valued, whereas passion may play a more significant role in individualistic cultures.
The implication of this research is that academic support strategies in nursing education must be designed to align with cultural contexts. Rather than implementing a universal "grit training" program, tailored support is necessary after identifying which specific factors are decisive within a given cultural framework.
What can nursing education institutions implement? First, introduce grit assessments during the admissions process. Adding non-cognitive factors to cognitive selection criteria (such as grades and interviews) can help identify students at risk of dropping out early on. Second, operate mentoring programs that foster perseverance. Regular coaching and the sharing of experiences from upperclassmen are effective in maintaining perseverance. Third, establish routines for students to reaffirm their goals. Sessions at the start of each semester to reconnect with their vision as future nurses can reignite their passion.
