Scandinavian Journal of Educational Research

Does the belief that "intelligence can be changed through effort" actually lead to academic achievement? While numerous studies have explored the effects of a growth mindset, few have utilized large-scale multilevel analysis to verify these effects at both the individual and school levels simultaneously.
Published in the Scandinavian Journal of Educational Research, this study conducted a multilevel analysis of 9,477 students in Norway to examine the relationship between a growth mindset and academic achievement. The central question was the role mindset plays during the transition from lower to upper secondary education.
The results revealed that at the student level, a growth mindset was positively correlated with academic achievement. Students with a strong growth mindset had higher rates of upper secondary school completion compared to those with a fixed mindset. However, the effect at the school level was negligible. Schools with a higher average growth mindset did not necessarily exhibit higher overall academic achievement.
This finding is significant. It suggests that while mindset operates as an individual attribute, it is weak as a collective attribute. In other words, how I perceive myself influences my own achievement, but how others perceive themselves has little impact on me. This implies that school-wide mindset interventions may be less effective than those targeted at the individual level.
Furthermore, socioeconomic background moderated the effect of the mindset. The impact of a growth mindset was more pronounced among students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. In environments with limited resources, belief acted as a more powerful driver of success. This suggests that mindset education could serve as a tool for mitigating inequality.
However, the researchers urged caution. As an observational study, this research demonstrates correlation rather than causation. It cannot be definitively concluded that a growth mindset increases achievement; it is also possible that students who achieve more are more likely to develop a growth mindset.
What can educational institutions do in practice? First, design mindset interventions for the individual level rather than the school level. Second, prioritize mindset education for socioeconomically disadvantaged students, as this can yield greater results from the same investment. Third, combine mindset education with structural support rather than treating it as a standalone prescription. Belief alone cannot overcome the barriers of one's environment.
