Will using ChatGPT in university make students think more critically—or will it encourage them to outsource thinking to AI? As generative AI becomes embedded in higher education, this is one of the most pressing pedagogical questions today.
This exploratory study examined the impact of generative AI, specifically ChatGPT, on critical thinking in higher education. It focused on two contrasting usage patterns: passive AI-directed use and human-AI supported collaboration.
Three key findings emerged. First, students who used ChatGPT passively—to generate answers or write essays—showed signs that critical thinking development was being impaired. By delegating the thinking process to AI, they forfeited the very practice opportunities needed to develop analytical, evaluative, and reasoning skills. Second, students who engaged ChatGPT as an active interlocutor for testing ideas, exploring counterarguments, and checking argument structure experienced a deepening of their critical thinking. Active back-and-forth with AI promoted externalization and refinement of thought. Third, instructor assignment design was decisive in determining which pattern prevailed. Open-ended reflection tasks and assignments requiring critical evaluation of AI-generated responses actively promoted collaborative, thinking-intensive use.
These findings clarify that ChatGPT is neither inherently helpful nor harmful for critical thinking—the mode of engagement determines the outcome. As an exploratory study, limitations in sample size and measurement methodology apply, and further research across disciplines and cultural contexts is needed.
Practical recommendations for higher education instructors: (1) Introduce metacognitive assignments requiring students to reflect on *how* they used ChatGPT, not just what they produced; (2) Design tasks that explicitly ask students to critically evaluate or challenge ChatGPT's responses; (3) Build a classroom culture where AI is understood as a thinking partner, not an answer machine. Teaching critical thinking in the AI age is fundamentally about teaching students how to engage with AI productively.
