What truly drives a student to engage — not just click, but actively participate? A research team from Malaysia turned to machine learning to find out, and the results were both precise and actionable.
Presented at the 2024 International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Data Sciences (AiDAS), the study applied machine learning techniques and attribute ranking to analyze student engagement levels across both online and face-to-face learning environments. The team, led by R. Hanapi and Mohd Norhisham Razali, collected data on diverse student attributes including class interest, attendance, effort, and technology proficiency.
The research followed a structured pipeline: data preprocessing to handle missing values and normalize attributes; attribute selection using Information Gain and Correlation analysis to identify key predictors; classification model training; and performance evaluation using accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score metrics. Trend analysis via data visualization was also performed to uncover engagement patterns over time.
The findings were clear and quantifiable. The most influential predictors of student engagement were class interest, attendance, and technology proficiency. Among the classification models tested, Logistic Regression achieved the highest performance, yielding a 93.30% classification accuracy. This level of precision means the model can reliably flag students at risk of disengagement before their performance deteriorates.
The trend analysis further revealed temporal and contextual patterns in engagement, giving educators a tool not just for prediction but for understanding when and where disengagement tends to emerge.
The practical implications are substantial. With reliable engagement prediction, educational institutions can design targeted interventions — supplemental digital literacy support for students with low technology proficiency, pedagogical adjustments in courses where interest scores are systematically low, or early outreach for students whose attendance trends downward.
The authors underscore that machine learning is particularly effective at discerning subtle behavioral patterns in virtual learning environments, and they call on curriculum designers to incorporate data-driven approaches into educational decision-making.
