Nearly half of computer science students drop out before completing their degree. To understand why — and what can be done — a UK researcher dug into three years of student learning data and surfaced eight factors that significantly drive engagement and academic outcomes.
Hafsa Al Ansari presented the findings at the 2023 IEEE Global Engineering Education Conference (EDUCON), reporting on an exploratory case study conducted within the Computer Science Department at the University of Huddersfield. The study set out to develop a model of student motivation factors within a learning analytics context, with the explicit goal of improving student retention and academic achievement.
The research employed a mixed-method approach. Qualitative data were collected via surveys and interviews to capture students' subjective motivational experiences. These were combined with quantitative analysis of more than 10,000 virtual learning environment (VLE) records spanning 2018 to 2021. The theoretical foundation was Self-Determination Theory (SDT), which frames motivation around the psychological needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness.
The analysis identified eight significant factors that affect CS student engagement and, consequently, their final grades. Crucially, these factors span both cognitive and non-cognitive domains. Academic performance is shaped not only by content comprehension but also by psychological variables — students' sense of belonging, confidence in their abilities, and degree of autonomous motivation. In other words, how a student feels about their program matters as much as how well they understand the coursework.
A key contribution of the study is that it goes beyond listing factors to offer an actionable model for learning analytics tool design. Al Ansari argues that future designers of learning analytics systems should adopt a human-centered design approach that incorporates both cognitive and non-cognitive factors. This would produce tools capable of understanding student motivation rather than merely tracking behavior.
The practical implications are especially relevant for high-attrition programs like computer science. Early monitoring of the eight identified engagement factors — paired with targeted support for students showing warning signs — could form the basis of an effective early-alert system. The model provides a concrete starting point for institutions seeking to raise retention rates and academic achievement through data-informed intervention.
