A preschooler grabs a toy from a friend and begins to cry. The teacher asks, "It looks like your friend is sad; how can we help them?" This brief interaction captures the essence of Social and Emotional Learning (SEL). However, questions remain regarding whether SEL is truly effective during early childhood and how long its benefits last.
An intervention study published in BMC Psychology examined the effectiveness of an SEL program for young children. Researchers implemented a systematic SEL program focusing on skills such as emotional regulation, cooperation, and goal attainment, measuring changes in social-emotional skills before and after the intervention.
The results revealed that children who participated in the SEL program showed significant improvements in emotional regulation, cooperation, and self-control. Compared to the control group, the effect size was moderate to high, with particularly notable improvements in emotional regulation and self-control. These effects were maintained in follow-up assessments, confirming the long-term sustainability of the program.
A more striking finding is the application of existing research—which suggests that deficits in social-emotional skills predict future academic and behavioral problems—in reverse. By cultivating these skills in early childhood, it is possible to prevent potential academic underachievement and behavioral issues. In other words, SEL is not a therapeutic intervention, but a preventive investment.
Why is early childhood particularly critical? From the perspective of brain development, this is the period when the executive functions of the prefrontal cortex develop rapidly. The neural circuits for emotional regulation and social skills are formed during this time; once established, these circuits are easier to maintain than to modify later. Early childhood SEL provides tailored intervention during the window of peak brain plasticity.
While the study is limited by its sample size and specific context, the quality of evidence is high, as it validates the effects of early childhood SEL through a systematic intervention study.
What can early childhood education centers and parents do in practice? First, incorporate "emotion check-ins" into the daily routine. A morning ritual where children identify and label their feelings is the starting point for emotional awareness. Second, transform conflict into an educational opportunity. Rather than seeking an immediate resolution when a conflict arises, encourage reflection by asking, "How were you feeling?" or "What could we do differently next time?" Third, provide parents with guidance on SEL activities they can implement at home. A consistent environment between school and home doubles the effectiveness of the learning.
