While providing emotional education to students, teachers often neglect their own emotional well-being. However, when teachers experience burnout, the effectiveness of students' Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) also collapses. There is a critical need for a model in which both teachers and students grow together.
A study published in AERA Open investigated the effects of a social-emotional learning program called "Leader in Me (LiM)" on both teachers and students. LiM is an SEL program implemented in thousands of schools worldwide, applying Covey's 7 Habits within an educational context.
The study employed a mixed-methods design, combining case studies from four schools with a large-scale survey. The results were clear. From the students' perspective, there were improvements in self-leadership, responsibility, and emotional regulation. Behavioral issues in the classroom decreased, while student initiative increased.
Positive effects were also observed among teachers. Teachers who implemented LiM reported higher job satisfaction and lower burnout indices. By practicing emotional awareness and self-care through the program, teachers were better able to provide emotional modeling within the classroom.
The most notable finding was that the changes in teachers mediated the changes in students. The more teachers internalized leadership habits, the greater the improvement in students' SEL. Teacher change was a prerequisite for student change. This suggests that SEL should not be a program targeting students alone, but rather a systemic intervention that transforms the entire educational ecosystem.
A limitation of this study is that it focused on the specific LiM program, making it difficult to generalize the findings to other SEL models. However, the discovery of the "teacher-student dual effect" can be expanded into a general principle for SEL design.
What can schools put into practice? First, when introducing an SEL program, conduct workshops for teachers first. It is essential that teachers first experience and internalize the principles of the program. Second, establish systems that support teachers' emotional health. This includes regular teacher wellbeing check-ins, peer support groups, and connections to professional counseling.
