Journal of Education and Academic Settings

Who thinks more deeply: a student studying alone or a student studying through group discussion? The relationship between collaborative learning and critical thinking has long been a central theme in pedagogy. However, empirical research demonstrating this relationship within specific contexts remains surprisingly scarce.
Published in the Journal of Education and Academic Settings, this study investigated the impact of a collaborative learning approach on the critical thinking skills of students in a College of Teacher Education. The researchers measured changes in students' critical thinking levels by comparing a collaborative learning group with a traditional lecture-based group.
The results revealed that students who participated in collaborative learning showed significant improvement in their critical thinking skills. Improvements were particularly pronounced in the areas of analysis, inference, and evaluation. While the traditional lecture group performed similarly in terms of basic knowledge acquisition, a clear gap emerged regarding higher-order thinking skills.
Why does collaborative learning promote critical thinking? First is cognitive conflict; encountering different perspectives forces students to re-examine their own assumptions. Second is the explanation effect; the process of explaining concepts to peers deepens one's own understanding. Third is distributed cognition, where collective thinking transcends individual limitations.
However, simply forming groups does not automatically cultivate critical thinking. Structural design in collaborative learning is essential. Only activities designed with clear role distribution, individual accountability, and group rewards proved effective. Simple group assignments can instead lead to "free-riding" and social loafing.
A limitation of this study is its reliance on a convenience sample from a single institution. Nevertheless, given the emphasis on critical thinking in teacher education, these findings provide a strong rationale for the intentional integration of collaborative learning into teacher training programs.
What can teacher education institutions implement? First, ensure that structured collaborative learning activities comprise at least 30% of the teacher education curriculum. Second, manage the quality of the collaborative learning. The key is to prevent free-riding by utilizing individual contribution assessments, peer evaluations, and process observation checklists.
