A Danish research team has published a scoping review in Contemporary Educational Technology examining the characteristics of learning designs that incorporate Adaptive Learning Technology (ALT) into nursing education. Authored by Bjarke Andersen, Rasmus Jorno, and Anne-Mette Nortvig, the study addresses a growing need to understand how technological innovations can be meaningfully integrated into health profession education through intentional and evidence-informed design.
The study is framed around a recognition that adaptive and personalized learning technologies are rising in prominence across health education contexts. However, the authors note that simply introducing new technology is insufficient to realize its educational potential. Novel learning designs that carefully account for the unique possibilities and constraints of ALT are necessary to translate technological capability into meaningful learning outcomes, particularly in a field as demanding as nursing education.
To identify relevant literature, the research team conducted a comprehensive search across five academic databases using the terms adaptive learning and nursing education along with a range of synonyms. The initial search yielded 340 records. After screening for relevance and conducting full-text reading, 22 articles were identified as potentially suitable. Following rigorous inclusion criteria, the final corpus comprised six studies, which formed the basis of the scoping review analysis.
The analysis of these six studies revealed four elements most commonly addressed within learning designs that blend ALT into nursing education: duration, engagement, placement of interaction in time, and learner agency. These dimensions collectively describe how adaptive technologies can be structured to support the complex and highly contextual demands of nursing training, where students must develop both theoretical knowledge and practical clinical competencies.
Duration refers to how long adaptive learning interventions are deployed within a course or curriculum. Engagement addresses the mechanisms through which students are motivated and kept actively involved with the adaptive system. Placement of interaction in time concerns how adaptive elements are sequenced and timed within the broader learning design. Learner agency speaks to the degree of autonomy students are given in navigating their personalized learning paths.
The authors conclude that future integration of ALT in nursing education must prioritize learning design quality over technology adoption itself. Collaboration among instructional designers, nursing faculty, and clinical experts is essential to create learning environments that harness the strengths of adaptive systems while compensating for their limitations. The study provides a foundational framework for educators and researchers seeking to develop more effective, technology-enhanced approaches in health profession education.
